Turning Plastic Bags Into a Labor of Love

What do you get when you combine a passion for the environment, and a desire to meet the needs of our homeless community? The answer is a beautiful Labor of Love.  Asbury United Methodist Church in Maitland Florida, is behind this labor of love. Shirley Brietz along with, Jack & Mel Frye have dedicated countless hours into this effort. It takes approximately 600 – 700 plastic grocery bags requiring 35 hours to assemble one moisture-resistant sleeping mat.  Asbury asked its members to donate plastic grocery bags a little over a year ago. The bags came in and we got ready to recycle the bags into sleeping mats for our homeless neighbors.

When deciding where to bring these sleeping mats the answer was simple. The Sharing Center is dedicated to serving our homeless population.  The decision was reconfirmed while dropping off the mats, two men walked up and inquired about the mats. What a gift it was to see them accept the mats.  We were all wearing face masks but I guarantee those gentlemen had BIG smiles on their faces.
