How To Host A Community Donation Drive

by TSC | Fundraising | May 14, 2026

Bring people together and make a meaningful impact in your community

Hosting a community donation drive is a simple way to support families in need while bringing people together for a shared purpose. Whether you organize one through your workplace, school, church, or neighborhood, every donation can make a real difference in the life of someone facing hardship.

Continue reading to find easy ways to host a successful donation drive that gives back to the community.

Choose what to collect

Start by deciding which items your drive will focus on. Helpful items to collect include:

  • Nonperishable food
  • Hygiene products
  • Professional attire
  • Clothing and shoes
  • Baby and toddler clothes
  • Jewelry and accessories
  • Winter clothes
  • Summer essentials
  • Household items and furniture

Choosing a clear focus helps people understand what is needed and encourages participation.

Make donating easy

Pick a convenient drop-off location where people regularly gather, such as:

  • Offices
  • Schools
  • Churches
  • Clubhouses
  • Community centers

Clearly label collection bins and include simple instructions on what items are being accepted.

Spread the word

Use emails, flyers, social media, and word of mouth to get your community involved. The more people understand the impact of their donations, the more likely they are to participate.

How your donation makes an impact

As a group or individual, donated items can help generate funding to support The Sharing Center’s mission or provide resources directly to families in crisis. Every item collected through your donation drive supports neighbors experiencing poverty, hunger, and housing instability throughout our community.

Items may be:

  • Sold through The Village Shoppes to help fund programs and services
  • Shared directly with families in need
  • Repurposed responsibly through community partners

What seems like a small donation can become meaningful support for someone going through a difficult season.

Two ways to support The Sharing Center

There are several ways community members can organize donation efforts to support The Sharing Center:

  • Traditional donation drives: These drives are often hosted by businesses, schools, churches, clubs, and community groups. They typically focus on collecting specific items such as nonperishable food, hygiene products, clothing, school supplies, or holiday gifts.
  • Fill-a-Truck events: Fill-a-Truck events provide a convenient way for neighborhoods, homeowners’ associations, and community groups to collect a wide variety of donated items. Residents often contribute furniture, household goods, clothing, nonperishable food, bicycles, toys, and other gently used items. The Sharing Center brings a truck directly to the community, making it easy for residents to participate. Donations help support The Sharing Center’s mission through direct assistance and funding for programs and services.

Both options provide meaningful support to local families and strengthen the community through generosity and service.

How you can help your drive succeed

A successful donation drive starts by making participation simple and meaningful. Here are a few easy ways to encourage involvement:

  • Clearly communicate what items are needed
  • Place collection bins in visible, convenient areas
  • Share reminders through email and social media
  • Explain how donations help local families

The Sharing Center encourages community members to share their donation drive efforts with the team to help ensure a successful collection.

Your community can make a difference

Every donation drive is an opportunity to bring people together for something meaningful.

As a longtime supporter of The Sharing Center and one of the individuals who helped establish the Fill-a-Truck program, Tina Craft shared the following reflection after hosting a neighborhood collection event:

“Today was another powerful reminder that when we come together, we don’t just fill a truck—we fill hearts, homes, and hopes. My incredible neighborhood joined forces once again to pack a truck full of gently used furniture, clothing, toys, pet supplies, bikes, and household essentials for families in need.

This isn’t just about donations—it’s about dignity, connection, and real change. The Sharing Center’s mission to end homelessness creates ripples: lifting families, fueling economic stability, and building brighter futures for generations.

To my amazing neighbors—thank you for showing up, giving your time, and proving that kindness is contagious. This is what community looks like. When we share what we have, we don’t lose anything—we gain purpose, unity, and the joy of lifting others. Let’s keep this movement growing!” ~ Tina Craft via LinkedIn.

Whether you collect a few bags of clothing or organize a larger community effort, your support helps create dignity, stability, and hope for neighbors in need.

When communities come together, small acts of generosity can create a lasting impact.
