More than an uncomfortable day

Extreme heat can prevent the body from cooling properly, increasing the risk of dehydration, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke. For someone living outdoors, finding relief is not as simple as going inside.

Public spaces may be limited. Transportation may be unavailable. Personal belongings cannot always be left unattended. Exposure can continue throughout the day and night as a result.

Heat makes daily challenges harder

Extreme temperatures can intensify challenges that people experiencing homelessness already face, including:

• Managing medical conditions
• Finding food and drinking water
• Maintaining personal hygiene
• Traveling to appointments
• Searching for work or housing

Completing a simple task can become exhausting or unsafe after hours in the heat.

A place to step away from the elements

The Oasis at the Sharing Center provides neighbors experiencing homelessness a safe place to access essential resources, including showers, laundry services, meals, haircuts, mail, internet access, and housing guidance.

These services offer more than temporary relief. They help restore dignity, reduce immediate barriers, and give unhoused individuals and families the support needed to take their next steps toward stability.

Meeting neighbors where they are

Not everyone can easily reach The Oasis or know what help is available.

That is where Outreach makes a difference.

By meeting people where they are, the Outreach team builds trust, understands individual needs, and connects neighbors with available services. During periods of extreme heat, these personal connections help ensure that vulnerable individuals are not overlooked.

Extreme heat is not only a weather concern. It is a public health and homelessness issue.
