Verda shares how The Sharing Center offered support and dignity during hardship

From hesitation to hope: Verda’s story

How The Sharing Center restored dignity and delivered real support during a season of unexpected need

When life changes overnight

Verda never imagined she would need help. As a retired community servant and active grandmother, she had spent much of her life caring for others—both through ministry and in public-facing roles. But when a storm severely damaged her 50-year-old home, everything changed.

“I really went into some serious debt just to get that house back to code,” she shared. “So I cut food right down the middle. I had to.”

Like many people facing an unexpected crisis, Verda wasn’t sure where to turn—until she saw her 91-year-old sister carrying groceries from her car. “She told me about The Sharing Center,” Verda said. “I was skeptical. I’ve heard stories about places that don’t treat people with dignity. But she said, ‘Come with me.’ So I trusted her. And I did.”

Compassion in every interaction

The moment Verda walked into The Sharing Center, she noticed something different. “I saw people from all walks of life. Everybody was individual, but everyone had a specific need. And the people helping them? They had a smile,” she said.

Verda has spent much of her life serving others through ministry and public service. She knows what it means to meet people with compassion. “It takes a lot to say ‘I need help.’ But here, you don’t lose your dignity or your integrity. You don’t feel like it’s a handout. It’s a hand up.”

From the initial intake to receiving her first basket of groceries, Verda noticed how thoughtful and kind every interaction was. “You get talked to, not talked down. You walk away with groceries in your hand and your dignity intact.”

Small kindnesses that go a long way

When asked what kind of food she received, Verda lit up. “They gave me things I would actually buy,” she said. “It’s like they peeked at my shopping list. There’s a salad I love that comes with everything, even dressing and toppings. And the meat, the canned goods, even the sweets—it’s all good.”

She shared that she’s never had to throw anything away. “Everything was usable, edible, and greatly appreciated.”

Thrift store treasures and real savings

In addition to food support, Verda also shops at The Sharing Center’s thrift store, something she says has made a huge difference for her family.

“My daughter is a divorcee, and we juggle the kids together,” she explained. “I’ve got a grandson who scrubs the jeans. You know how boys do. Instead of spending $30 on one pair at the mall, I can buy four or five. The rest can go to something else.”

She says the store provides quality clothes at a minimal cost. “You can get your kids what they need and still have money left for necessities. That’s what the thrift store and The Sharing Center do. They help without pity. They offer love and assistance.”

Why dignity matters

Verda has referred others to The Sharing Center and encourages anyone in need to explore the services available. But she knows many are hesitant. “There are a lot of people who need help, but they’ve been treated badly in other places. It just deters them,” she said.

“At The Sharing Center, you never feel less than human. That’s what makes it special, the heart of the people. You can’t fake that. It comes from a deeper place.”

Gratitude and a call to action

“I’m just one person, but I know I’m not the only one who feels this way,” Verda said. “The program is wonderful. I thank God, the donors, and everyone who works or volunteers here. It’s a gift from God and a true blessing.”

Her message to the community is simple: “Anything you can give, it’s more than appreciated.”
